Holidays & Week-end Stays Historical

Delve into the past

On Ile de Ré, there is no shortage of heritage sites which bear witness to the island’s and even France’s history. And it is perhaps in Saint-Martin de Ré that the island’s heritage is the most concentrated. With the Vauban Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Citadel, Hotel de Clerjotte, and Musée Ernest Cognacq-Jay, the island’s capital village is marked by the past, something you will discover as you wander along the streets and alleys.

A huge abode built by the island’s seigneur Jean-Masseau de Beauséjour in the 18th century and listed as a historically significant building, La Baronnie Hôtel & Spa**** will charm all history-lovers. With the woodwork and period fireplaces in the bedrooms and vast, luxuriant gardens, you will be immersed in one of the jewels of Ile de Ré’s architecture. In fact, it is on this basis that the Hotel will take part in France’s Heritage Days in 2019, opening its large doors to reveal its paved courtyard for guided visits to tell its story.

Ideally situated on rue du Baron de Chantal, a few metres from the port and ramparts, guests can set off by foot to explore the streets, enjoying the charms of the village at any time of day.
