La Baronnie Hotel & Spa at Saint Martin de Ré
From 1400 to 1775
It was in 1400 that the sovereignty of the lords of the island bowed to the rule of the king of France. The capital of the “Baronnie of Ré” was Saint-Martin. The castle proudly stood on the present location of La Baronnie which was built between 1712 and 1721 on the foundations of the XIIth century castle.
La Baronnie was first owned by Lord de Beauséjour, then by La Marquise de Tencin in 1743, her nephew the Count d'Argental, Le Marquis of Puisignieux, Capitaine des Dragons in 1775...
From 1785 to the beginning of the 20th century
On April 22nd1785, La Baronnie was acquired by king Louis XVI for Marie-Antoinette. It was then seized by the State in 1790 as National property and sold publicly in La Rochelle. Pierre Polycarpe Fournier des Ormeaux, former mayor of Saint Martin de Ré, bought the domain and it stayed in the Baudin family until 1845. La Baronnie was then in good condition, major repairs had just been made when the nuns of the community of Sainte-Marie de la Providence settled down, in 1849. The creation of their girls' boarding school turned out to be a failure. In 1858, La Baronnie fell into the hands of a clerk of the court of justice, Julien Moreau. At the beginning of the 20th, it became the property of Mister Calas, a master mariner.
The current owners bought La Baronnie in 1996 to open the first "guesthouse" of the island. In spite of its very bad state, it was love at first sight and they enthusiastically began its renovation, which lasted over 10 years.
In 2010, the guesthouse became a hotel. In 2012, La Baronnie Hôtel & Spa obtained a 3 star classification, then in 2015, the 4 star classification.
La Baronnie, registered on the French National heritage, found its soul and letters of nobility. The spirit of this family house has been preserved. Its hosts feel at home in this unusual hotel. La Baronnie Hotel & Spa is a jewel in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, difficult to leave, where you would want to come back as soon as possible.
